PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A Porterville teen and his father were arrested after a high-speed chase almost killed an officer and several pedestrians. Porterville Police say they arrested 40-year-old Gustavo Garcia and his 15-year-old son after the teen led officers on a dangerous Friday night pursuit with "blatant disregard for the safety of citizens." According to detectives, this was not the first time the teen had driven recklessly and fled from officers. Police say patrol officers attempted to pull over the black Ford Mustang on Olive Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on Friday after it blew through a red light and nearly collided with other motorists. The Mustang failed to yield to officers and instead led them on a dangerous pursuit throughout the City of Porterville. During the pursuit, officers utilized Stop Sticks in an attempt to deflate the Mustang's tires. Police say the teen evaded the Stop Sticks and in doing so attempted to hit the deploying officer with the vehicle; the officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being run over. Officers then organized a roadblock on Westfield Avenue. Instead of stopping, they say the teen intentionally collided with a police vehicle before fleeing northbound on Milo Street, then westbound to Highway 65 where he got away after traveling at speeds over 100 miles per hour. Detectives from the Narcotic Investigations Unit and Special Investigations Unit, who police say are familiar with the history of the Mustang and the teen driver, assumed the investigation. Detectives say they tracked the teen and the car to Strathmore. There, at a gas station on the intersection of Avenue 196 and State Route 65, they located the teen and the Mustang. The boy's father, Gustavo Garcia, was also at the gas station in a different vehicle. Through investigation, officers determined that Garcia had prior knowledge of his son's unlicensed status, history of reckless driving, and numerous evasions from law enforcement, but still allowed him to operate the vehicle, causing undue danger to citizens and the teen. Police say the 15-year-old was then arrested under suspicion of attempted homicide of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, reckless evading from a peace officer, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and hit and run. Officers state Garcia was also arrested under suspicion of child endangerment and allowing an unlicensed person to operate a motor vehicle. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact the Porterville Police Department at 559-782-7400 or through their departmental Facebook or Instagram page.
