(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand ALLENTOWN — Delainey Ross and Katherine Reinhart were working on free kicks at the end of practice the other day and the execution, by their own admission, “did not look good.” You wouldn’t have known it on Tuesday. Ross powered in a header from Reinhart’s free kick midway through the first half, Elizabeth Buchert iced it late in the second half as the Hopewell Valley girls soccer team scored on its only two shots on target and beat Allentown, 2-0, to clinch at least a share of the CVC Colonial Division title. “We found a way to finish,” Ross said with a laugh. “We’ve been talking about a way to get that diving header and we got it.” “When we worked on it yesterday, it didn’t look to good,” Reinhart admitted. “Today we just executed really well. I guess we kind of have more focus and determination for it because we know this is it, this is the moment we’ve been practicing.” The Bulldogs (10-2-2, 5-0-1) extended their unbeaten run to 11 games (nine wins, two draws) and locked up a piece of the Colonial crown on 11 points. They could have won the title outright had other results gone their way, but both Notre Dame (2-1 over PDS in OT) and Robbinsville (1-0 over Lawrence) won to take it to the final match day next week. Hopewell needs a win or draw against Robbinsville for the outright crown. If Robbinsville wins and Notre Dame beats Steinert, the three of them will be co-champs. A division title, especially after realignment, was one of the goals the Bulldogs wanted to check off. “Last year we all had a meeting and said our goal was to be the CVC champion,” Ross said. “We decided that, and we are practicing to get to that position.” The Redbirds (6-5-1, 3-2-1) lost their third straight and were eliminated from the division race. They weren’t able to generate many chances against Hopewell’s stingy defense and its league-high seven cleansheets. “We’re just not finishing goals,” Allentown coach Kim Maurer said. “The little things like getting weak side or getting far post or serving the ball across the box. It’s those things we got to fix.” Hopewell, however, has an identity: dig in defensively and find a way to scratch out a goal. “We know who we are,” veteran coach John McGinley said. “We would like to score some more goals at times, but we also know that we are going to do the little things as a team to defend well. When we get opportunities, we are blessed with some kids who can score. They’ve bought in and they’ve all done a great job.” Hopewell Valley (10-2-2) 1 1 — 2 Allentown (6-5-1) 0 0 — 0 Goals: Ross, Buchert (HV). Assists: Reinhart, Pagnotta (HV). Shots: 3 (HV). 7 (A).
