SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Many people in our area are unsure about why they were denied for FEMA disaster relief money, and they're trying to sort through misinformation that's spreading like wildfire. "A lot of people are saying, no you have to pay it back and no don't take money from FEMA, and Kamala's sending it here, or Trump's promising that. They don't know what they're talking about," Rhonda Harting, a Savannah resident, said of what she's been seeing on social media. The biggest misconception is that the $750 you can qualify for through FEMA is a loan. It isn't. "The $750, it's a grant," Michael Hart, a FEMA spokesperson, said. "It's not a loan. It's funds that people are eligible to receive. If you do receive it, it is not a requirement to pay that money back." The public isn't just dealing with misinformation. They're also confused. "They said records indicate you have a homeowner's insurance policy. Therefore, FEMA assistance is denied," Harting said. Florida evacuees seek refuge in the Hostess City She said her insurance won't cover the cost of repairing her roof, either, not for anything less than $27,000. "I don't know what to do," she said. However, FEMA said insurance doesn't disqualify people from the assistance. It's an add on. "The first call everybody should be making is to their home insurance and their flood insurance agency. Then, the very next call should be to FEMA," Hart said. The biggest thing FEMA said they want people to know is that the line of communication is open - for however long the process may take. "What we encourage people to do is contact FEMA as often and as much as possible to understand any requirements they still need to provide." People like Harting said they don't have all the time to wait. "Our roofer, he's trying his best to protect it, but it needs to be replaced," she said. "So, if we have something come through here, we're done for. We're going to have a lot more damage to our house, and it's our home."
