SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - It has been two weeks since the ceiling collapsed at 219 W Broughton St. during Hurricane Helene, displacing several tenants and closing at least three businesses, including the Ordinary Pub, which have since not reopened. According to data collected by the City of Savannah, 339 buildings were damaged after Helene, and eight have been destroyed. 219 W Broughton St. has not been deemed destroyed by the city yet, but the damage is so bad that crews have not even made it inside. A minor shift in debris has caused the roof to destabilize which means that crews cannot go in until that is no longer a threat. "It's a pretty massive task to have these professionals go through these buildings and ensure these buildings are safe and not safe," said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson. Tenants said they are still not able to step foot in the building. "We really hope to be back in there, but I'm not sure how that's going to be possible just by the shape the building's in," said Luke Thompson, who rents an apartment in the building. Thompson told News 3 that he should be hearing from Benchmark Properties, the building's owner, this week, but has not received an update since the collapse. "I don't really see how it would architecturally sound for us to back in there and just live... so we'll just wait for updates and go from there," he said. In the meanwhile, the City of Savannah Water Resources Department and Georgia Power are working with building management to isolate water and power for the neighboring building in order to get stores like Urban Outfitters up and running again. Johnson said the emergency stabilization process for 219 W Broughton St. is happening as soon as possible.
