CORONA — Good teams find ways to win when their stars struggle. That was the case Tuesday afternoon for Santiago’s girls golf team, as the Sharks defeated Roosevelt 216-231 in a Big VIII match at Eagle Glen Golf Club and grabbed sole possession of first place in the standings. The win avenges a 210-219 loss at Goose Creek Golf Club on September 19 and gives Santiago (6-1 overall and in league) a one-match lead in the standings with three matches remaining. Santiago freshman standout Finlay Nihei, who was 4 under par in two matches last week, shot a 42 on Tuesday, with a triple-bogey at No. 7 after losing a ball off the tee.  But teammate Charvi Shukla settled down after a shaky start of triple-bogey, double-bogey to shoot 43, giving their group a tie. Shukla made six straight pars before finishing with a double bogey in near darkness. Senior co-captain Ava Ruffalo earned medalist honors for Santiago after a career-low round of 38, which started with a birdie at the 327-yard first hole and finished with three pars in her final five holes after bogeying both par fives. Joey Marshall recovered from a double bogey and quintuple bogey in back-to-back holes to shoot 1 over par for her last six holes and post a 43. They defeated Roosevelt’’s Dani Tavares and Lauren Grant-Timassy by an 85-99 margin in group two to give Santiago a lead they’d never surrender. “My biggest thing is getting them to shake off the mistakes and just keep focusing forward,” Sharks coach Elena Marker said. “Ava stepped up in a big spot for us today as a senior while Charvi and Joey settled down after tough stretches to post nice scores. My message to Finlay on the way down to scoring was that you’ve carried us all year and we’ve got your back today. Roosevelt’s Nichole Sun shot a 46 after starting with back-to-back double bogeys while Amelia Chen shot a 3-over-par round of 39 in the Mustangs’ first group. “We’re very excited to be in this position and control our fate for the stretch run,” Ruffalo said. “This is a team and when one of us has a bad day we’ll do the best we can to pick that person up. Finlay has been huge for us all year and today it was our turn as a group to pick her up in a big match. This is a big step towards our goal but we have to remind ourselves that we’re not there yet and there’s plenty of golf left to play.” Kaelynn Greeley shot a 50 to round out the scoring for Santiago. Santiago continues Big VIII League play at Norco on Thursday at Glen Ivy Golf Club, while Roosevelt (7-2, 5-1) plays Centennial tomorrow at Hidden Valley Golf Club.
