BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — Extra Life is a charity program where gamers, live streamers, businesses, and even major companies donate time and money to the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) of hospitals — and one way to do so is by releasing special game assets that can only be obtained through a charitable donation. To celebrate this year's Extra Life Day on November 5th, Magic: The Gathering is doing its part by releasing Pixel Perfect: a special Secret Lair drop created for a good cause. Extra Life began after Victoria Enmon, a young Leukemia patient at a CMN hospital, bonded with Jeremy, a radio DJ who also ran a video game website. After the two bonded over their love of video games, Jeremy put out a request for his audience to send some to the girl — and when Victoria received thousands from well-wishers, those she could not play were distributed to other CMN patients. While Victoria would sadly pass away later, her legacy lives on through the organization's annual fundraiser. BRB: Extra Life- Gaming for Good The partnership between Magic and Extra Life began in 2013, but the recent development of the Secret Lair program has allowed them to raise funds in a truly unique way with an annual drop that directly benefits the charity. Normally, these special sets take the form of children's drawings given new life by professional MTG artists — but this year, the tie-in pack features a more 'retro' style sure to appeal to fans of the video games Extra Life was originally built on. Each card in the drop is themed to old-school platforming video games like the Castlevania and Mega Man franchises, and features a bevy of notable characters from modern Magic history — including catlike Planeswalker Ajani Goldmane playing the role of advisor, Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas as a boss, and the fan favorite Creature Fblthip as the hapless main character. However, none of these characters are featured in the pack's contents. Rather, it features a selection of utility spells that fit into many different strategies: Mana Geyser and Delayed Blast Fireball become more powerful at larger tables, Fierce Guardianship is a counterspell that can bypass its own Mana cost, and Lightning Bolt is a tried and true damage spell with a long history in the franchise. The charitable aspect of this lair is more than enough to encourage a purchase, but the value it contains is also worth nothing. The obvious standout 'chase' card in the set is Fierce Guardianship, each of the other entries is also fairly interesting in its own right: Lightning Bolt is nothing special but an iconic card nonetheless, but Mana Geyser has a fairly high foil value, and Delayed Blast Fireball has never been printed in foil before. This results in a surprising value much higher than the average Secret Lair drop, which makes the bundle worth the price of admission in both a moral and financial sense. Unlike most modern Secret Lair Drops, the Pixel Perfect selection is print-to-demand. A certain number of packs have already been printed and are ready for shipping, but every order placed during the set's monthlong run will be fulfilled. Gaming: MTG honors the King of Commander with special Secret Lair In addition to the cards themselves, MTG will also be selling tee shirts, game playmats, and other merchandise in the same style on Extra Life's website. Cosmetic items for MTG Arena (Magic's online platform) will also be available for purchase in-game. Like the Secret Lair drop, a majority of the proceeds from these items will be donated to CMN. The limited-edition Pixel Perfect Secret Lair will be released on October 14, and remain available until November 17.
