Sodus, N.Y. (WROC) — Congratulations to Gene Hoskins, our latest Golden Apple Award winner. Hoskins has had a career in education spanning more than three decades. He's been a teacher, a principal, and now came out of retirement to go back to work in the classroom. Sodus Superintendent Nelson Kise says, "Gene is one of the most dedicated, caring, and selfless educators I have ever met.   I've known him for well over 20 years now when he was a teacher, principal and now a teacher again.  I can't think of anyone who cares more about kids and their success than Gene Hoskins." The Martinez family nominated Mr. Hoskins for a Golden Apple Award after all three of their children had him as a teacher and Principal. They could see how much he cares about the success of his students.   William Martinez is a Junior at Sodus High School. "He's a really good teacher.  You can tell that he really cares.  It's not a job to him, you can tell that he really wants to do it.  You can see it when he teaches.  He's involved." He is so involved he can be found at school late into the evenings and on weekends coaching sports teams and helping kids tackle tough subjects. Tina Peets is the Principal of Sodus Jr. Sr. High School. She says, "He teaches chemistry, physics and living environment.  So, he teaches all three upper-level classes and it's tough content.  He engages them, meets them where they are and when they're struggling like Will said he's here morning evening whatever the kids need he's available and you couldn't ask for a better teacher to receive this award."   After being an administrator for 20 years, Mr. Hoskins came out of retirement when he saw there was a need for teachers. He says, "education is one of the few careers that every single day you can have a positive impact on someone's life.  It's easy when we get into the grind of things to forget that, but it's what draws me to this work.  if you want to make a difference in this world, lord knows they are short on teachers and it's a great career."   Imagine the difference he had made after 35 years in education with no end in sight. "I love working with kids.  It keeps me young. I can't imagine doing anything else.  It's not always easy being in the classroom.  There are a lot of challenges.  But I wouldn't for a second choose anything else.  It is what I love," says Hoskins.
