SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A list of San Francisco public schools that will either close or merge with other schools was announced as the San Francisco Unified School District continues to face a major budget deficit that is said to be hundreds of millions of dollars. "There are no shortcuts or easy solutions. That can be frustrating, but in the end, solving the problem is worth the perseverance," SFUSD Superintendent Matt Wayne said. According to SFUSD, 13 schools are impacted in total. Three will officially close, and eight will merge with others. The school district said two will be "a welcoming school for a closed school." Here is a specific list of what will happen to these schools, according to SFUSD: El Dorado Elementary: Students will merge with Visitacion Valley Elementary, with all students moving to the Visitacion campus. Harvey Milk Elementary: Students will merge with Sanchez Elementary, and the campus will "potentially (be) repurposed as an Early Education Center" Jean Parker Elementary: Students will attend Gordon J. Lau (Cantonese biliteracy school) or John Yehall Chin (general education). Malcolm X Elementary: Students will merge with Carver Elementary, with all students moving to the Carver campus. Redding Elementary: Welcoming school for Yick Wo students (General Education school and Special Day Class Program) SF Community Alternative TK-8: Students will merge with Paul Revere TK-8 School. SF Public Montessori: Students will merge with Rosa Parks Elementary. Spring Valley Elementary: Students will merge with John Muir Elementary. Sutro Elementary: Students will attend Lafayette or Alamo and CIS at DeAvila (Cantonese biliteracy schools) Visitacion Valley Elementary: Merge with El Dorado Elementary on the Visitacion campus. Yick Wo Elementary: Students will attend Redding Elementary (General and Special Day Class Program) and Sherman Elementary (General Education). June Jordan School for Social Justice: Student will merge with John O'Connell High School and move to the O'Connell campus The Academy: Students will merge with Raoul Wallenberg High School and move to the Wallenburg campus. The reason why these elementary schools were selected, according to SFUSD, is because these TK-8 schools had fewer than 260 students and are in the lowest 50% of composite scores. For high schools, that number goes up to 400, per the school district. "Middle schools are not being considered for closure right now because the facilities are at 90% capacity," Wayne added. "I have to be honest about the tough decisions that are on the horizon to balance our budget.  There will be significant staff reductions, which will impact all of our schools," Wayne said. While San Francisco Mayor London Breed has no say in these decisions, she did step in last month, providing the district with a stabilization team to help. School district officials said the budget deficit is partially due to declining enrollment, which has dropped by more than 4,000 students since the 2017-2018 school year and is projected to drop by about 4,600 more by 2032. The school district's superintendent said a virtual town hall meeting will be hosted for the community on Thursday discussing the decisions made, how they came to this conclusion and where the budget currently is.
