SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (WSAV) - Residents of Countryside Village Mobile Home Park in Effingham County are overjoyed to have their water restored after 12 days without it. Residents at 101 Sparrow Lane believe Hurricane Helene's heavy wind damaged the well they get their water from, but they say they were having a hard time getting answers from their property manager for days. Two people spoke to WSAV before the water was restored, but they wished to remain anonymous. They say they're paying some of the cheapest rent in Effingham County, so moving wasn't an option for them. They say a mixed group of people live at the park: elderly, families with kids and people with low or fixed incomes. Toombs County woman loses everything again after Hurricane Helene "We haven't had water since the hurricane," one anonymous resident said Tuesday morning. "Every time somebody talks to the landlord, it just doesn't work out... It's been hectic." Some of the residents were resorting to showering at the local YMCA and buying water at gas stations. "It's a hassle because not everybody can afford that," the resident said. Another person told WSAV, "We kind of feel like we're at the bottom of the barrel... We don't have time to keep going back and forth to try and find showers. Laundry is piling up. My toilets... they reek. There's houses down the way that have sewer backing up in their sinks, tub and their toilets." In an effort to get answers, WSAV News 3 went to the management office and knocked on the door. It was locked and no one answered. About an hour later, the property manager was there but declined an interview. She did say water should be restored by the end of the day. Although they have water back, these residents say other needs haven't been met. Many of them claim that they have had a hard time getting things repaired, like the skirts around their mobile homes or their roofs. As they waited for the water to be restored, they said many people were coming together to help one another. Tracking Milton: What we can expect across the region "We try and do everything we can. We try and help each other out," one resident said. "It's been a beautiful thing. It really has, but it's hard." The Effingham County Fire Department stepped in to help by providing a pool of water as well as some to drink. Also, a group of small business owners and other residents in Effingham heard about this issue on social media. That group is donating supplies and food. One resident said that a member of the county commission has been helpful to them. We have reached out to that commissioner and the county spokesperson to learn how.
