It was already clear by the final weeks of 2023 that a second Winter Olympics would be staged in the state. The International Olympic Committee in November had selected Salt Lake City as the likely host of the Games of 2034. The Park City area was a key to the bid, with the concept map identifying Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort and the Utah Olympic Park as important competition venues. As Park City leaders and Deer Valley were negotiating an agreement in late 2023 centered on a road network that was key to the vision for major development at Snow Park, the likelihood of another Winter Olympics was mentioned.A point in the agreement between City Hall and Deer Valley addresses the Winter Olympics in broad terms. The inclusion of the Games in the agreement did not garner widespread attention as the two sides were locked in talks, but months later the point is an intriguing sidebar to the discussions. The International Olympic Committee in July — seven months after City Hall and Deer Valley reached the agreement — awarded the Games of 2034 to Salt Lake City. The Deer Valley competition venue is slated for terrain at the lower portion of the resort, outside Snow Park Lodge. The development Deer Valley is pursuing would transform Snow Park into a full-service base area. The project would be developed on the land where the resort’s vast Snow Park parking lots are located. Large garages would be built to account for the parking that is lost as the land is developed. The idea involves remaking the Snow Park base with residences, commercial space, a hotel and entertainment. The point in the agreement between City Hall and Deer Valley mentioning a Winter Olympics is not a critical section, but it is notable nonetheless as the community enters the early phases of preparing for the Games of 2034.“A vibrant and well-planned Snow Park area is of high importance to Park City and will advance preparations for the anticipated return of the Winter Olympics to Park City in just over 10 years,” the point reads.Deer Valley early in the week provided prepared responses to a Park Record inquiry about the inclusion of the Games in the agreement. The resort said completion of the Snow Park project is forecast by 2029, five years prior to the Games.“This project will just amplify the 2034 Olympic experience at Deer Valley. With retail and dining options in the new village it will just make for a vibrant base at the base of an Olympic venue,” the resort said.Deer Valley said it is not yet clear what role a project could play during the Games.“There will be additional lodging, retail and dining options that will just add to our guests’ experience in relation to the Olympics as well as all the time. At this time we do not have definite plans for what will take place in the new village,” Deer Valley said. The Park City Planning Commission on Wednesday is scheduled to return to the talks about Snow Park. The meeting is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Marsac Building. It will also be broadcast online on the municipal website, parkcity.org.
