The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) is spotlighting Manufacturing Week in South Dakota from October 4-11, 2024. This week-long event is an opportunity to highlight the role that manufacturing plays in the state’s economy and the various range of products made right here in South Dakota. “Manufacturing continues to be a cornerstone of our state’s economy, and it’s exciting to see the innovative products being created in our communities,” said GOED Commissioner Joe Fiala. “We take great pride in the companies that have chosen South Dakota as their home.” In South Dakota, manufacturing jobs offer high-tech and high-paying opportunities. From developing precision agricultural products and innovative chemical solutions to producing ethanol and advanced medical devices, manufacturers in the state are integral to everyday life and the larger economy. This industrial landscape showcases a commitment to innovation and quality that drives economic growth and enhances the quality of life for residents. Despite national trends in the past decade, South Dakota’s manufacturing sector has thrived, with employment increasing by 9.1% to more than 45,000 employees and the manufacturing GDP growing by 38.2% to $5.48 billion. South Dakota’s manufacturing industry is also a major player in exports, accounting for 91.4% of the state’s total exports, with key markets including Canada, Mexico, and China. Leading subsectors by employment include food manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, and transportation equipment manufacturing, proving the industry’s diversification and strength.
