SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Fire Prevention Week is seven days dedicated to raising fire safety awareness. This year, departments across the country are shining a spotlight on the importance of smoke alarms. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is conducting a Sound the Alarm event during Fire Prevention Week, installing smoke alarms at homes across the city. "Smoke alarms are literally the difference between life and death, literally the difference between a lot of damage in your home and getting that fire stopped at a small stage," SFFR Fire Inspector Brandon Fey said. "We need to have smoke alarms everywhere you sleep, so like in the bedrooms, outside of where you sleep, like in a hallway, and at least one on every floor," Fey said. Fey says Sioux Falls Fire Rescue has 80 installs today alone and has provided smoke alarms to 2,300 homes since 2022. That's more than 10,000 smoke alarms. "Our goal is to make it accessible to anybody. If you're deaf or hard of hearing, we have bed shakers for you that we can put in your home. There's a text, if you are deaf and you can't call 211, you can text 211," Fey said. "It's free, it saves lives, please do it," Sioux Falls resident Susan Christensen said. Susan Christensen had the smoke alarms in her home replaced by Sioux Falls Fire Rescue when she bought the property in 2014. "I got a flyer in the mail and I looked at it and thought 'wow, this is free?', so I even had to call to make sure it was free and they came out and installed it and it was fantastic," Christensen said. She recently retired from the nursing field after 45 years and today welcomed back Fire Rescue. "After ten years, I'm older, so getting on ladders and those type of things is a little frightening to me," Christensen said. And helping folks like Christensen is why Fey says he has the best job in the world. "I know every time I go into a home I am making an impact and possibly saving a life," Fey said. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is partnering with Nyberg's Ace Hardware this month. You can round up your purchase and that money will be used by the department to purchase hardwire and combo -- CO and smoke -- alarms. The battery operated smoke alarms were donated by the Red Cross. If you live in Sioux Falls city limits and need new smoke alarms, call the Helpline Center at 211.
