NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Norfolk seized several food trailers and golf carts from China that did not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Norfolk customs officers seize over $450k in dental supplies shipped from China Between July 18 and Sept. 18, CBP officers confiscated five golf carts, four food trailers and one scooter with a combined value of about $50,000. The vehicles were destined for Suffolk, Virginia, Chester, Virginia, Berkley Springs, West Virginia, Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis, Indiana, Denver, Colorado and Spokane, Washington. CBP officers consulted with inspectors from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) who determined that the trailers and golf carts violated Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. “The United States has stringent vehicle safety regulations that are designed to protect you and others while traveling on our nation’s roadways, and Customs and Border Protection officers will continue to work with our National Highway Traffic Safety Administration partners to ensure that vehicle imports fully comply with those safety standards,” said Mark Laria, CBP’s Area Port Director. CBP points out that it is easier than ever to purchase items from foreign markets online and urges consumers to do their due diligence to ensure such items conform with U.S. safety laws. Anyone interested in importing vehicles to the U.S. should visit nhtsa.gov/importing-vehicle.
