The American Red Cross is sending out a plea for additional volunteers to help with recovery from hurricane activity. The need for volunteers is increasing each day. The vast damage brought by Hurricane Helene is known. What isn’t known is how Hurricane Milton will affect Florida. Kentuckians interested in helping can receive online training and be deployed to the South. Red Cross Bluegrass Chapter Director Lynn Washbish said her organization covers all costs for transportation and lodging. “Send them out and get them in areas that have been affected and have the need right away. They’ll stay someplace, not sure. Sometimes it’s a shelter. Sometimes it’s a hotel shared with a couple other people,” said Washbish. Nearly three dozen Kentuckians are on the ground now providing safe shelter, food, water, and support to families. Washbish said the Red Cross doesn’t have a goal regarding how many to send out, but rather just as many who want to sign up. Washbish noted anyone over age 18 is eligible to help. “Anybody that wants to deploy to come and help those in need right now is what we’re looking for. The need is great. We’re not through this yet with Hurricane Milton coming in and we need people to deploy and help those that potentially lost everything or lost someone,” said Washbish. Volunteers must complete necessary online training and be able to commit to a two-week deployment. Washbish added that financial donations are also in great need. ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
