KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some Worlds of Fun union members are threatening to strike with two and a half weeks to go before the theme park closes for the season. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1, talked about that possibility outside the theme park Tuesday afternoon. That day, their leaders told us Thursday, October 10, will be interesting because that's the next time both they and Worlds of Fun leadership meet to try and hammer out a new contract. "You would not have ride mechanics, you would not have electricians, you would not have ride controls, you would not have ride carpenters, and some of these positions are very difficult to replace," SEIU Local 1 Organizer Rose Welch said in response to what would happen if SEIU union members go on strike. Worlds of Fun Communications and Public Relations Manager Brian McGannon had a much different tone with FOX4 earlier in the day though. Missouri AG plans to appeal ruling against Halloween signs for sex offenders "We do not anticipate any disruptions to the guest experience as negotiations continue," McGannon said in a statement to FOX4. "We are fully prepared to operate the park in the event of a work stoppage during the operating season." "Every single amusement park in the United States wants more rides control technicians than they have, and if ours are on strike," Welch said during the news conference, throwing up her left arm, wondering how Worlds of Fun would operate if they go on strike. "Our current offer on the table provides employees in their first year of a new agreement between a 4-25% increase with an overall wage increase of approximately 10% in the first year of a new contract," McGannon said earlier in the day to FOX4 as well. Before Welch and other union leaders talked at the news conference, FOX4 also talked to Chief SEIU Steward and Worlds of Fun Carpenter Kyle Wedlock. Wedlock said what McGannon told us is partially true, but he also said starting pay of brand new employees could actually drop from what it is now in the latest offer from the theme park. "From the company's standpoint, if you're working here right now, you would not see a pay decrease, but any new hire that would come in, which we do have openings, those new hires would be making a lower wage," Wedlock said to FOX4 Tuesday. MoDOT Kansas City seeking input on I-70 corridor safety, accessibility The 'new hires' part is what Wedlock's concerned about the most. He says a new hires' starting salary could go from about $30 an hour to $20 an hour. Worlds of Fun is open from Friday, October 11 through Sunday, October 13. Then it's open again Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 20. Finally, it's open Thursday, October 24 through Sunday, October 27. The 27th is the final day it's open for the season.
