INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne Township Fire Department responded to a "large apartment fire" Tuesday morning. Public police reporting systems indicate WTFD crews were called to the 3700 block of Montauk Court — which is located on the west side of Indianapolis — around 11 a.m. on a report of an apartment fire. When first responders arrived at the scene, they observed a building with heavy fire in its attic space and a large volume of thick smoke permeating from the area. According to a post on its Facebook page, WTFD immediately initiated search and rescue operations and deployed attack hose lines to contain the fire that had broken out in the building's attic space. WTFD reported that the blaze caused significant damage to much of the eight-apartment building. Thirty people were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross and Wayne Township Trustee are now working to provide temporary housing for those who were displaced. As of this article's publication, the cause of the fire was still under investigation. WTFD received assistance at the scene from the Speedway, Indianapolis, Pike Township and Brownsburg Fire Departments. IEMS, IMPD and the Red Cross also responded to the area to help the fire departments.
