WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) - Florida residents continue to drive north as Hurricane Milton is expected to hit their homes. Floridians described hotels being completely full and gas stations being empty as they traveled north through the Sunshine State yesterday. "We were on the road for a way good while and we called many of the hotels/motels and couldn't find a room," Paula Harris, Florida resident, said. "We actually spent the night in our car. Probably a first for many." "We stopped at a couple gas stations and they were completely out," Bryan Barrera, Florida resident, said. "Shelves completely empty and whatnot through Tampa to pretty much Jacksonville." However, hotels along I-95 in Walterboro said they are beginning to fill up with reservations. "We were sold out last night," Cindy Sims, general manager of Baymont Inn, said. "We're trying to get more coming in, as the calls are coming in. We got some staying nightly, depending on their money situation. Then you got some staying a week until they can go back home." Some Floridians are planning to stay in the Lowcountry or even in more northern states with their family. "We're very comforted we have that support system up there," Chris Diaz, Florida resident, said. Others said some of their friends and family stayed in Florida, and will continue to stay in contact with them. "Everybody's a little apprehensive about it and we just saw the devastation from the other one," Harris said. "I just don't know how some people are going to make it this time."
