Willoughby Hills was recently notified by the Lake County commissioners that its Community Development Block Grant has been approved to install sidewalks in the city’s west end business district. According to Mayor Chris Hallum, $192,000 is the amount that has been approved for the sidewalks. “The city has committed $100,000 of the remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money toward the project as well,” he said. In late August this year, Willoughby Hills adopted an ordinance related to the installation of the sidewalks in the area of Route 6 and Route 91. Hallum said there have been talks in the past about the need for better ways to traverse the commercial districts in the city and that there is also an opportunity to install sidewalks on the east, and in the main district of the city. Hallum has expressed this project was something he wanted to see for a long time and that the master plan agreed with it. “Multiple people were interviewed and the consensus was this was a need on the south side all the way to the Community Center,” he said. “The sidewalks should at least extend to the Community Center so seniors could have a safe way to travel if they choose to walk without having to walk in the road.” While this project strictly pertains to sidewalks, there have also been discussions of installing bicycle paths and making the path along Route 91 an all-purpose trail. “This would be accessible to those who want to ride, run, walk, etc. along this path all the way to the village,” Hallum said. The mayor said the project will commence in 2026.
