NEWARK, N.Y. (WROC) — More local money is going towards battery-making, as global company, Ultralife, plans to spend $50 million to acquire New England-based battery maker Electrochem. Ultralife has seven total companies — six subsidiaries — spanning the globe. According to their website, Ultralife provides "solutions" for defense, security, batteries, communications, and more. Their Newark company, which is also their headquarters, focuses on battery and energy products. Electrochem in Massachusetts said Ultralife in a statement, "designs and manufactures primary lithium metal and ultracapacitor cells and battery packs serving energy." “Electrochem brings a blue-chip customer base with little or no overlap with Ultralife’s customers, long-tenured technical resources which we plan to utilize in progressing our global new product initiatives," said Mike Manna, president and CEO of Ultralife in a statement. Ultralife plans to close the majority share acquisition by 2025. Manna adds that once the sale is complete, the current GM of Electrochem will become a senior VP at Ultralife.
