SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — It's Fire Prevention Week, and the Savannah Fire Department (SFD) aims to educate citizens on how to make their homes as fireproof as possible, helping to prevent potential dangers before they arise. Fire Prevention Week is observed annually in October to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed thousands of buildings and took many lives. This year's theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!" emphasizing the important role smoke alarms play in keeping our homes safe. Having a working smoke alarm reduces your risk of dying in a home fire by 54%, yet 60% of deaths occur in homes without a functional smoke alarm. It can really save your life," said Fred Anderson, the chief investigator for Savannah Fire. "We are fortunate that up to this point so far, we have not seen any fire deaths in the city of Savannah this year. But we have certainly had our share of them in our past and we like to keep that trend of no death, no fire-related deaths, in the city. So, fire prevention measures that's how we get there." So far this year, Savannah Fire has responded to more than 112 building fires and no deaths from a fire have been reported. Chief Anderson shared some SFD stats. 2024 STATS: 0 deaths 112 building fires 72 cooking fires 558 fire responses 2023 STATS: 3 deaths 120 building fires Remember: a working smoke alarm could be the difference between a close call and a tragedy.
