The Redlands Footlighters will bring haunting stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe to the stage in time for Halloween with “Nevermore: The Tales & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe,” an original adaptation of some of Poe’s works by the Footlighters’ own Katharine Buffy Henshaw. Henshaw is also directing the production, which features “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Raven” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” as well as some lesser-known selections. The production opens 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and runs weekends through Oct. 27, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. There is also a 2 p.m. performance the last Saturday of the run, followed by a question-and-answer session with the actors and director. Henshaw’s play brings Poe to life and places him inside his own stories in a confrontation with his personal demons, even as his creative works unfold on stage. “Poe’s stories act as a mirror, reflecting our secret impulses, the dark things we fear we are capable of doing,” Henshaw said in a news release. “He weaves a powerful tapestry of love, grief, rage, terror and — surprisingly — humor.” Guiding the journey are four characters, the Ensemble, who lead the audience and Poe, performed by Jason Connors, through Poe’s life and development as an author. The Ensemble characters — Sarah, Sissy, Grey and Perry, played by Kayla Tate, Taiquira S. Williams, Jason Crewse and Joe Rossi — slip in and out of stories, inhabiting the characters and interacting with Poe. “Footlighters is thrilled to be presenting not just one but two original productions in our 2024-25 season,” Pamela Lambert, Footlighters president, said in the news release. “This effort is a key part of our mission to support and promote local artists in Redlands.” The second original production, set in the Jazz Age and scheduled for Feb. 14-March 2, is Lambert’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” a comedy that explores themes of love, gender and class. Tickets for “Nevermore” are $20 for general admission, $14 for students with ID and $17 each for groups of 10 or more, available at redlandsfootlighters.org or by calling the box office at 909-793-2909. The Redlands Footlighters Theatre is at 1810 Barton Road, next to the Asistencia.
