PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Stop & Shop announced Tuesday that it's working to make groceries more affordable at all of its stores in Rhode Island. In a press release, the supermarket chain said it's lowering prices on thousands of items, eliminating its paper bag fee, and launching new "Savings Kiosks." "We have been listening to our customers – and we have heard you. That is why we’re making it possible to buy more groceries for your family, at a lower cost, at every one of our stores in Rhode Island," Stop & Shop President Roger Wheeler said. "We’re going to continue to listen to your feedback and will, over time, make even more changes across all areas of the store." The grocery store chain said the Savings Kiosks will allow Go Rewards members to save on their groceries with digital coupons, printed in-store or delivered to their phone, every time they shop. Last week, a group of Massachusetts lawmakers, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, sent a letter to Stop & Shop's parent company questioning their pricing practices. They cited a study which showed the company was charging "egregiously higher prices" at an urban location, compared to a suburban store. The company denied the claims, saying that prices that may vary by location based on a variety of factors, including store size, labor costs and whether the property is owned or leased.
