He is charged with assault on a first responder, failure to exercise due care, evading arrest, intentionally evading arrest in auto, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to obey a traffic officer, reckless driving, resisting official detention, and theft of property $10,000-$60,000. Traderrick Carter (SCSO) *** MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A police officer and a suspect are headed to the hospital after a struggle between the two led to the officer's gun being discharged. During a brief press conference on Monday, Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe detailed the event. Around 5 p.m. on Monday, an officer saw a car traveling southbound on Mendenhall Road. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a silver Nissan Maxima with no tags and a broken-out rear passenger side window. The driver of the Maxima refused to stop and continued driving at a high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the vehicle but eventually saw the car again at the intersection of South Mendenhall and Shelby Drive and attempted another traffic stop. That is when police say the driver of the Maxima went around traffic but ended up losing control, striking a utility box. According to reports, when the officer approached the car, the suspect was "fidgeting" as if he was trying to get something. The officer says they saw an empty gun holster in the front passenger floorboard of the vehicle within plain view as they continued to tell the suspect to get out of the car. 2 dead after hit-and-run in East Memphis As the officer began to pull out their gun, the suspect got out of the car on the passenger side and allegedly hit the officer with his elbow. The suspect then reportedly used his right arm to hit the officer on his left hip, which then made the officer fire a single shot and lose his gun in the nearby grassy area. Neither the officer nor the suspect were shot. The officer managed to holster their weapon and take the suspect into custody following the struggle. Crowe said that citizens who witnessed the struggle tried to assist the officer, with one even calling the police for help. Teen critical after chase, officer-involved shooting; 2 men on the run Both the officer and suspect have been taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. During the investigation, officers say the Nissan Maxima was reported stolen from the Chuck Hutton Chevrolet dealership parking lot on Mt. Moriah Road between September 23 - October 7. The Maxima is valued at $24,903. While in custody, the suspect admitted to investigators that he suspected the Maxima he was driving was stolen and that he did try to run from police during the traffic stop. He also admitted that he was trying to fight officers to avoid being arrested after he wrecked the car.
