KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City woman was charged Saturday morning after driving an SUV into a crowd and hitting three students outside of Van Horn High School. According to charging documents, Keona Kiara Nicole Smith faces three counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk, one count of second-degree assault, and one count of driving while intoxicated resulting in physical injury. Witness describes Missouri crash that left motorcyclist in need of multiple surgeries Court records said that just after 3 p.m. on Friday, October 4, students at Van Horn High School were being dismissed when a GMC Acadia, driven by Smith, started moving toward a large group of students. A School Resource Officer (SRO) told law enforcement they saw Smith leave the faculty parking lot, drive over a curb into a grassy area, and continue slowly through a crowd of students. According to the probable cause statement, multiple people were yelling at Smith in an attempt to stop her. However, she continued through the crowds, hitting three students, one of which received minor injuries. After hitting the three students, Smith drove forward, eventually hitting a 4-foot retaining wall. Court records said the GMC became high-centered and stuck before dropping off the other side. When the SRO finally got to Smith, he recalled seeing her 14-year-old special needs daughter in the back seat of the SUV. Man charged in connection to Northland stabbing over the weekend Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and arrested Smith. She was placed under observation where she agreed to perform a breathalyzer test. According to court records, Smith's blood alcohol concentration was 0.206. Smith is currently being held at the Independence Police Department Detention Unit. She made her first court appearance on Monday and has a bond review scheduled for Tuesday, October 15.
