When police asked Koopman about her relationship with the victim, she claimed the boy was "just like one of my kids." Koopman at first denied having any sexual encounters with the juvenile, telling police: "That's nasty." But investigators confronted Koopman with the letters she wrote the child, including ones where they spoke about having sex. This is when police said that Koopman admitted to having sex with the underage boy. "I was drunk," she claimed. But Koopman then later claimed she couldn't drink due to having lupus. When questioned about the contradiction, Koopman told officers she was under the influence "of other things."
