INDIANAPOLIS — The TSA has stopped over 5,000 guns at airport security checkpoints throughout the country so far this year, with over 60 of those guns being found at Indy's airport. According to new numbers released Tuesday by the TSA, 62 firearms were detected at the Indianapolis International Airport between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30. TSA intercepted 95 guns at IND throughout all of 2023. According to the TSA, security officials have screened a record number of travelers throughout this summer. However, firearm detections are slightly down from the same period last year. In total, TSA officials have stopped 5,028 firearms at security checkpoints so far this year. Data shows that 93 percent of those guns were loaded. The total represents an average of 18.3 guns found per day at TSA checkpoints in the US. PREVIOUSLY: Rep. Victoria Spartz carried a gun into DC airport, TSA says Transportation Security Officers have reportedly screened over 678 million passengers thus far in 2024, an increase of over six percent from 2023. During the most recent quarter (July to September), the rate of firearms at TSA checkpoints was 7.5 guns per one million passengers. This is a decrease from 8.1 guns per million passengers in 2023. “TSA is committed to keeping travelers, our officers, and airport employees safe, and the number of firearms being discovered at airport security checkpoints remains a significant challenge,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “Each firearm brought to a checkpoint, whether by accident or on purpose, presents a threat to other passengers and our employees, and causes delays for the traveler with the firearm." TSA said that while passengers may travel with a firearm, the gun must be: Secured in their checked baggage, Unloaded, Locked in a hard-sided case, and Declared to the airline when checking the bag. Furthermore, firearms are prohibited at all TSA security checkpoints in airports. For more information on traveling with a gun, click here.
