HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows that most types of documented crime went down in North Carolina from 2022 to 2023. According to a nationwide summary of crime statistics released by the FBI, when using a data tool to check the numbers specifically for North Carolina, overall crime, including both property and violent crime, went down 2.4% between 2022 and 2023. Violent Crime The number of homicides was down from 924 in 2022 to 876 in 2023, a 5.2% decrease for the year. 2022's homicides had also decreased by over 9%, after a nearly decade-high number of homicides in 2021, with 1024 reported across North Carolina law enforcement in 2021. Other violent crime also went down. With a 5.1% decrease in violent crime across the state, North Carolina was roughly in line with the rest of the country, where violent crime overall decreased by 3%. Nationwide, homicide alone decreased by 11.6%. Property Crime Largely, crime has been decreasing since 2021 in North Carolina, with the exception of car thefts, which have seen large increases in the past few years. Motor vehicle theft increased 7% from 2021 to 2022 and then jumped 31% from 2022 to 2023, surging by nearly 7,000 more reported incidents from 2022 to 2023. This reflects a nationwide trend, where it rose 12.6% across the country. Property crime overall dropped 1.9% in North Carolina, close to the nationwide decrease of 2.4%.
