WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A man was arrested Monday after leading police on a pursuit through three counties, even after all four tires deflated on his pickup truck, according to Indiana State Police.
Fort Wayne troopers with ISP joined officers from Allen, Huntington and Whitley counties to chase down a 1995 Toyota pickup truck around 1:30 that afternoon.
It all started when an officer with the Huntington County Sheriff's Department tried to stop the truck for an alleged traffic violation on US 24 near Roanoke. The driver of the truck - later identified as Sheldon Straessle, 25 - is accused of refusing to pull over for the officer.
Straessle allegedly led officers on a chase through southwest Fort Wayne into Whitley County. Despite police putting stop sticks out that deflated all four of the truck's tires, Straessle allegedly continued driving - but at a slower speed on bare rims- toward Columbia City. According to ISP, a trooper on SR 9 initiated a Precision Immobilization Tactic (PIT), which forced the truck into a ditch, finally ending the pursuit.
Straessle was taken to the Whitley County Jail after being medically cleared at a hospital, according to ISP.
ISP arrested Straessle on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, both Level 6 felonies. He also faces a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
The full list of agencies that responded to assist in the chase include ISP, the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, Roanoke Town Marshal, Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Sheriff's Department, Whitley County Sheriff's Department, Columbia City Police Department, South Whitley Town Marshal, Parkview Whitley EMS, and Smith Brothers Towing.
