BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Anyone looking for a new and unique fall activity should consider taking up birdwatching. Venture out to a new park in the area or place a bird feeder outside on your property and choose a place to sit and watch at any time of the day to spot different types of birds. The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden hosts guided birding events. People will need to wake up bright and early to attend these 7 a.m. Saturday events and pay $10. USA TODAY analyzes and organizes backyard bird observations as part of its Project FeederWatch, a citizen science program. It lists which birds can most likely be seen in Louisiana during November. See which types of birds you can expect to see in the fall in the Baton Rouge area. Northern Cardinal Male Northern Cardinals are hard to miss with their bright red feathers. Places to look for these birds include fields or patches of bare ground or overheard like telephone wires. Carolina Chickadee This adorable little animal has a distinctive shape due to its short neck and big head. All About Birds describes the Carolina Chickadee as "inquisitive and acrobatic," adding that they can be found in forested areas, urban and suburban yards and parks with large trees. House Finch This type of finch enjoys eating from feeders with small, black oil sunflower seeds and can be found in city parks, backyards, urban centers, farms and forest edges, according to All About Birds. Chipping Sparrow According to All About Birds, Chipping Sparrows feed on the ground, take cover in shrubs and can be seen singing from the tops of small trees. These birds can be spotted in parks, along roadsides and in backyards. White-winged Dove The All About Birds website describes White-winged Doves as plump, square-tailed doves with long, thin bills and small heads. They are likely to eat at elevated bird feeders. Blue Jay It's easy to spot a Blue Jay due to its bright blue feathers. These birds can be found near oaks, towns, cities and parks. White-throated Sparrow White-throated Sparrows can be seen in woods, parks and woodsy suburbs, according to All About Birds. Chances are you'll see them in backyards if you have birdseed.
