Sexual assault is a reality on college campuses all across the country. A University of Kentucky epidemiologist in obstetrics and gynecology says trauma-related costs associated with this crime far outweigh the efforts and costs associated with prevention. The University of Kentucky reported sexual assaults on September 4th, September 22nd, and October 4th. Dr. Ann Coker, who chairs UK’s Center for Research on Violence Against Women, said reporting leads to services for the victim and accountability for the perpetrator. Victims and offenders often know each other, but Coker said that doesn’t in any way lessen the impact. “You can feel a great sense of betrayal, if this is person who for example is someone you’re dating or a friend as much as someone you don’t know at all,” said Coker. Coker said self-blame, increased use of substances to cope, and post-traumatic stress can all contribute to high emotional and financial costs long term. While opportunity for intimacy on a college campus today is far greater than years past, Dr. Ann Coker doesn’t see that as a major factor in the number of sexual assaults. “So, I don’t think it’s an issue of access but of potentially entitlement or going beyond what the person..both of the individuals agree in terms of whether sexual contact is what they desire,” said Coker. Coker said too often there is no discussion about consent before a sexual encounter.
