TAKOMA PARK, Md. (DC News Now) -- Montgomery County is a step closer to installing three noise cameras, designed to quiet down noisy cars in neighborhoods. Councilmember Evan Glass, who chairs the Transportation and Environment Committee, said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that both that committee and the Public Safety Committee approved the bill to bring the cameras to the county. Increased police presence in Montgomery County on Oct. 7 anniversary As DC News Now previously reported in July when the bill was introduced, the goal is to capture images of, and potentially fine, drivers of cars that exert noise above the legally allowed 80 decibels. During the pilot program, which is set to last through June 2026 if approved, drivers would be warned for the first violation and then fined $75. While the bill outlines the pilot program, it does not say which three locations the cameras will go to. That has some neighbors asking the county to be a part of the program. "It's right at the border of Silver Spring and Takoma Park. So maybe we can cover both jurisdictions," said Allen Fetter, one of several Domer Avenue residents pushing for a camera at the intersection of Domer and Flowers Avenues. A neighbor, who did not sign the letter Fetter and others sent to the county council, said there are loud cars in that area "daily" but added that she doesn't view the camera as a necessity even if she would support it. She said it bothers the neighborhood. "[People are] resting, they're coming home from work, they want to relax," she said. Roxana Arias, who lives along Georgia Avenue told DC News Now in July that her son has autism, and she said the noise is problematic for him. “I’m happy to hear that because we need it,” she said. “He is scared because sometimes it is too loud.” Ahead of anticipated competition for the cameras, the county shared data and a heat map of where noise-related citations and violations have occurred.
