ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Much of Florida is under a state of emergency due to Hurricane Milton. While not everyone has been ordered to evacuate, officials have told residents to keep a close eye on the weather and heed their warnings. AAA of Western & Central New York says the Category 5 hurricane is expected to have a major impact on travel this week, especially those heading to Central Florida and its theme parks. Starting Tuesday morning, Tampa International Airport (TPA) is closing. Tuesday evening, St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) is closing. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is closing Wednesday morning. Advisors suggest travelers download your airline's app and sign up for alerts as delays and cancelations begin. Many carriers have already begun issuing waivers. Customers should check their airline's website for specific details on travel advisories. As of Monday night, the major theme parks, Universal and Disney's Magic Kingdom did not announce closures but plan to post updates on their websites. However, on Wednesday Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and other attractions with unique environments will temporarily close. Also, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will close on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Check the theme park's severe weather policies on their websites. AAA is working with travel partners and providers to inform members who booked travel on the latest updates but acknowledge the evolving situation as it relates to Hurricane Milton's path and timing.
