FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - With the November General Election just a few weeks away, ballots were sent out to all registered voters in Fresno County Monday morning.  James Kus is the Fresno County Clerk and says voters should expect to receive their ballots in the mail this week.  “If a voter hasn't received their vote-by-mail ballot by next Monday, Oct. 14, they should give us a call and we'll get a new one sent out to them," he said.  According to Kus, there are three ways to cast your vote: in-person, using a drop box location, or mailing your ballot in.  He explained there is plenty of time to make sure your vote is counted, but there are a few key dates to keep in mind. That includes the deadline to register to vote online. "You can continue to register all the way up to 15 days before the election. And that is Oct. 21," Kus said. "After the 21st, you can vote and you can register, but you have to go in person to either my downtown office or one of our vote centers, which first open on Oct. 26." Fresno County has 53 vote centers where Central Valley community members can cast their vote.  On Oct. 26, voters can access 10 centers in Fresno County. Kus said an additional 43 centers will open the weekend before Election Day. Starting Oct. 8, you'll also be able to drop your ballot off at a drop-off location.  If you're planning to vote in this election, Kus explained whichever way you decide to cast your ballot, it must be in by 8 p.m. on Nov. 5.  "Vote centers and my downtown office will open at 7 a.m. and they'll close at 8 p.m. The US Postal Service will stop doing postmarks at 8 p.m. So, you have to have your ballots into the post office postmarked to us," he said. "For our drop boxes, we will actually go out and lock those at 8 p.m. Anyone who's in line to use those drop boxes to vote at that point can put their ballot in, but no one will be allowed to come in after that point. Once those boxes are locked up, if someone leaves their ballot on top, we're not going to count it." Additionally, there are changes available to Fresno County voters this year, including a live vote-by-mail option.  "A voter can actually bring in their completed vote-by-mail ballot and bring it to the vote center. They can see the ballot actually go into the tabulator machine right there in front of them," Kus said. "I very much encourage anyone who wants to use the live vote-by-mail process to come in early. Do not wait until Election Day. They're going to be lines to begin with, and this would just make it longer." Election officials will also provide another way to verify people's signatures online.  "We're also now offering online signature cures. If your vote-by-mail ballot has been challenged because you forgot to put your signature on it, or if your signature itself has been challenged, we do have an option where you can go online and provide a signature. You will have to be able to sign online," Kus said.  These additions aim to make things easier for voters and help ensure information is accurately and securely processed. Kus says election security is something that remains top of mind for the clerk's office. "Security's a big concern with our office here. Whenever we're handling ballots, whenever we're working with ballots, we're using two-person teams, we're using tracking," he said. "If there are any questions, members of the public can give us a call. Our processes are open for observation, whether it be voting, whether it be our tabulation or vote-by-mail processing, all of that is open and available during our regular work hours."
