HANFORD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Superior Dairy in Hanford went up for sale Friday, shaking up loyal customers.  “Anybody that I find out is coming over here… I’m all, ‘Do you like ice cream?’ They’re like, ‘Yes,’ I say, 'You need to go over to Superior Dairy,’” said Elizabeth Acosta, who has been a customer of the shop for 15 years. The ice cream shop has stood on 325 North Douty Street since 1929, and many consider it a local staple. However, Real Estate Agent Ryan Portugal says the owners are ready to retire. “After some hard conversations, the family decided that it was just time. You know, they've seen it through for 95 years and now they'd like to see somebody else take it for the next 95 years and give it the same love and care that they did,” Portugal said. Superior Dairy is still owned by the original family, and Portugal confirms they are looking for a buyer who will keep the ice cream shop open. “The outcome that everybody wants, not just myself, the owners, but I think all of the Valley, is to find somebody that wants to come in, give it the love that it needs, and just take it to the next level,” Portugal said. The owners listed the property for $2.5 million on Friday, and Portugal says his phone has not stopped ringing with interested buyers. No matter the price of the business, customers say the nostalgia they attach to it is priceless. “It’s tradition. I’ve eaten ice cream all over the world and this is better than it gets,” said Eldon Johnson, another customer at the shop. Portugal says the owner’s years on Douty Street have been sweet, and they will miss bringing flavor to the Central Valley.
