SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Baystate Children's Hospital was awarded a $100,000 check from 'Hyundai Hope on Wheels' this Monday afternoon. The theme of this year's event was 'Hope Lights the Way.' Through 'Hyundai Hope on Wheels' efforts, families who have children facing cancer will receive innovative treatments, without taking a financial hit. Every 36 minutes, a child in the U.S. is diagnosed with pediatric cancer. More than 44 children every day receive this devastating news, including here locally. 'Hyundai Hope on Wheels' stepped in to present a check to help provide financial support for Baystate Children's Hospital cancer patients and their families. "It goes towards some vouchers for food and gas as families are missing time from work traveling here, having to balance between feeding their family and getting care this will help families a little bit with those costs," said Pediatric Oncologist, Ken Bujold. This grant is part of a $26 million commitment from Hyundai to honor their 26 years of ending childhood cancer. "Research is truly the key to making new discoveries, new treatments and driving that survival rate up," said Executive Director of Hope on Wheels, John Guastaferro. "The survival rate is a little over 85%, but that's not good enough we want to do everything we can until we find a cure and strike out pediatric cancer for good," added the Owner of Gary Rome Hyundai, Gary Rome. Local kids impacted by pediatric cancer dipped their hands in paint and placed them on a white Hyundai Hope on Wheels vehicle to commemorate their personal stories of hope. Funds will also provide a child life specialist dedicated to helping kids cope with the disease while in the hospital. Children will even get to experience milestone events that they may miss while they are out of school like prom. "We want families dealing with this disease to live like a family, we want both the child and family to have a wonderful quality of life as they possibly can while they undergo this life-changing treatment," said Pediatrician-in-Chief at Baystate Children's Hospital, Dr. Charlotte Boney. For over 3 decades, 'Hyundai Hope on Wheels' has awarded over $250 Million to support pediatric cancer research and programs nationwide.
