PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Monday marks the one year anniversary of Hamas’ surprise terror attack on Israel and while many are reflecting on that day, the war is still raging on in the Middle East. It was a night of prayer at the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island in Providence. “It brings me hope for the future, we look for peace, always for peace, that’s the most important thing,” said Susan Deblasio, a member of Rhode Island’s Jewish community. People came together to remember the 1,200 lives lost on October 7, 2023 and the nearly 100 hostages still being held by Hamas. “The last 365 days have been difficult, they’ve been hard and in a lot of ways today feels just like every one of those other days,” said the CEO of Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, Adam Greenman. Greenman said some people in the state have lost loved ones in Israel. “We want to make sure that we’re not forgetting those who are being held captive, we want to make sure that they are not forgotten, and we also want to make sure that our community remembers that we’re all in this together,” said Greenman. Deblasio explained to ABC 6 News her experience over the last year while having family and friends in Israel. “It’s frightening, it’s also very moving, it’s traumatic,” said Deblasio. “We have people who are mourning the loss of their loved ones, people who don’t even know where their loved ones are and if they’re alive or dead, so there is a lot of uncertainty and a lot of sadness, and a lot of hope for the future.” Since Hamas’ terror attack on Oct. 7, 2023, according to Palestinian health authorities, the war in Gaza has killed more than 41,000 people.
