WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Thundermist, a nonprofit community health center that serves over 62,000 patients in Rhode Island, is asking for help following major financial issues and layoffs. In September, Thundermist was forced to lay off 122 employees, as well as reduce the pay of most of the remaining staff. “Thundermist is a good ship in trouble, and we need all hands on deck,” said interim Thundermist CEO, Maria Montanaro.” Together we can turn this ship around and ensure Rhode Island does not lose a vital part of its healthcare delivery system.” The nonprofit provides medical care, dental, and behavioral health services to patients who struggle with substance abuse disorders, homelessness, unemployment, and many other issues. The company’s goal is to keep the business open while also regaining financial stability, without having to lower its standard of care. In a statement, Montanaro said without help, thousands of children would be behind in their immunizations, 214 pregnant people will not be able to receive their prenatal care, and 2,100 trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse people will not receive safe, essential healthcare. “If you are a donor, your help is needed now more than ever,” said Montanaro. Thundermist is still accepting patients, and have not cut services or hours at its locations in Woonsocket, West Warwick, and South County. Categories: News, Rhode Island, Your Health
