(COLORADO SPRINGS) — It's a fall tradition that goes back several generations… Venetucci Farm is once again ensuring that no child goes without a pumpkin this fall. Nick Venetucci started giving away free pumpkins in the 1950's, and his mission is still going strong -- kindergartners from across the Pikes Peak Region have begun visiting the farm for school field trips. The day begins with excitement, as the kids hop off the big yellow school bus and run up to the big red barn. "So we start with, 'what do plants need to grow? Air, soil, sun, and water,'" said Billy Kinn, the Director of Environmental Education at the Catamount Institute. While the visits have changed over the years, one thing has remained the same. "Venetucci Farm has a legacy here, specifically because Nick and Bambi Venetucci gave away free pumpkins that they grew every year for decades," said Kinn. Although the Venetuccis have passed on, their spirit lives on through local organizations that keep the tradition alive. "It just shows when people come together, we can really do some special stuff for the youth," said Kinn. The one rule at Venetucci Farm is you have to be able to carry the pumpkin that you select. While the soil isn't suited for growth anymore, pumpkins shipped in from Pueblo are perfect for the young guests. Over 1,500 will be picked this year, adding to the more than one million given away since the tradition began. Each pumpkin is uniquely special in the eyes of the kindergartners. "I love my pumpkin. I can name it Georgie," said one student. Venetucci Farms continues pumpkin giveaway tradition The farm is making jack-o-lantern dreams come true year after year, so every kid can have a gourd during the Halloween season. The farm is open to the public on weekends until the end of the month. Bristol Brewing's Venetucci Pumpkin Ale, that supports Ventucci Farm and programs like this, will be released Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m.
