(COLORADO) — The Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Rocky Mountain Field Division (RMFD) will partner with the Colorado National Guard to promote DEA's Red Ribbon events at select schools around Colorado beginning Monday, Oct. 7. Starting Monday, various students will have the opportunity to see a National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. The UH-60 will be at select schools in front of hundreds of students and staff to promote a healthy, drug-free life. Students will have the opportunity to make a drug-free pledge, take pictures, and see the helicopter up close. Both agencies will visit 41 schools in Colorado in October. Some schools it will be visiting include Lamar, Wiley, Colorado City, Larkspur, and more. Red Ribbon Week began more than 30 years ago following the death of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a special agent who was killed by drug traffickers. High school students from his hometown in Calexico, California began wearing red ribbons to commemorate him and his sacrifice. “This is such a special and unique way to connect with elementary and middle school students across Colorado – and it’s a wonderful way to remember Kiki’s legacy and promote what he believed in,” said DEA RMFD Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen. “We thank our partners at the Colorado National Guard for their dedication to this important annual DEA mission.” Red Ribbon Week is officially the week of Oct. 23 through Oct. 31. The week has now turned into an annual initiative to mobilize communities and educate youth about substance use.
