An early scene in The Wizard of Oz involves a cyclone (tornado) that collects the home of Dorothy then drops kitchen and kaboodle in Munchkin Land. Welcome. An initial glance of a beautiful house in Trenton, conjures a thought that somewhere, perhaps in nearby Allentown, Lawrence, and Hopewell Twp. or some other suburban community, a home has gone missing after being swooped up by a large funnel cloud then deposited at 36 Prospect St. Anyone seeking a what in the world (WITW) moment should peruse the accompanying photo of this article. Such an attractive place encased by all that trash delivers a stunning realization that location still matters in real estate. Construction of homes in or near areas backdropped by generational poverty remains risky business, likely destined for failure as community conditions overwhelm dreams. “Why don’t you buy it?,” asked a woman named Laytona. She had parked her vehicle on Prospect St. for a discussion on the capital city. No way, this neighborhood lacks both stability and shows all the signs of desertion by both people and politicians. Nearby, a once beautiful church crumbles; a house across the street shows a yard filled with trash; another building includes a rear portion that pulls away from the original structure. Blocks away, Mercer Medical Center, which closed in 2011 when Capital Health System exited Trenton for Hopewell, remains a grand eyesore. If one could promise no injuries then we should pray for a tornado that collects this entire area and puts all the crap in a nearby landfill. For now, some situations require immediate attention regarding trash removal. So, who should Trenton residents contact on these matters? Dial 1-800-Bobbitt, as in Andrew, the mayoral assistant, a fixer and influencer to former Mayors Doug Palmer, Tony Mack (temporarily), Eric Jackson, and current Mayor Reed Gusciora. People, no personal grudge exists here with Gusciora. Replace him with City Council President Crystal Feliciano or NAACP President Austin Edwards and they would receive similar instruction — Raise the bar on living standards. Clean up this dirty city. Or, hope for the twister. L.A. Parker is a Trentonian columnist. Find him on Twitter @LAParker6 or email him at [email protected].
