TOPEKA (KSNT) - Workers will be closing different road sections and lanes around the Polk-Quincy Viaduct area in Topeka this month, creating some permanent changes for drivers. Joseph Harrington with the City of Topeka said in a press release on Monday, Oct. 7 that crews will be working on numerous projects around the Polk-Quincy Viaduct in the coming days. These projects include the following: Thursday, Oct. 10 Workers will close various single lanes along Monroe and Sixth for pavement repairs. Crews will close single lanes along Sixth from MacVicar to Monroe after initial work is completed on Monroe from 10th to Sixth. Drivers will still be able to move through this area. Schedule to be finished by Friday, Oct. 11. Monday, Oct. 14 Drivers will need to follow one of two different detours as workers close Willow at Sixth . Detour routes include: Eastbound Sixth - drive east on Sixth to Lane, then go north on Lane to eastbound Fifth. Westbound Willow - traffic will be directed south on Washburn to Sixth, then west on Sixth to the intersection with Willow. Tuesday, Oct. 15 Work crews will being paving operations in several areas. Drivers should expect lane closures for the following streets: Sixth Avenue - MacVicar to Monroe. Monroe Street - 10th to Sixth. Madison Street - 10th to Sixth. Air Force Thunderbirds to start practicing over Topeka for Thunder Over the Heartland Harrington also said the city is making some permanent changes to local streets to help accommodate larger traffic loads when I-70 closes during the Polk-Quincy Viaduct next year. These include the following: Closure of Willow at Sixth. Loss of the middle turn lane on Sixth from Willow to Washburn. Creation of another westbound lane on Sixth from Willow to Washburn. Elimination of the left turn on east Sixth at the Washburn intersection. The outside westbound lane on Sixth at the Washburn intersection will let traffic driver west through the intersection or turn right onto Washburn.
