The Park City Police Department on Saturday afternoon received a report of a sighting of two mountain lions on a trail in Old Town.Someone contacted the agency at 1:50 p.m. indicating the animals were spotted in the area of Ontario Avenue. The heavily developed street is a block from Marsac Avenue but also close to tracts of undeveloped land between Deer Valley and Old Town.It is rare for a mountain lion to be reported so close to a residential area. It is also unusual for the police to receive a report of two of the animals. It was not clear from police reports whether the two mountain lions were together at the time the agency was contacted or whether the person saw the two separately. The Police Department said officers “circulated the area but did not locate any wildlife.”The police only occasionally receive reports of mountain lion sightings, but the cases are notable since the animals pose a danger to people and pets. The location of the Saturday sighting is also of note since it was in a populated area. The Police Department, meanwhile, received a series of other reports involving wildlife. Officers who respond to wildlife sightings typically attempt to ensure the safety of the animals, motorists and people who are in the vicinity of the animals.Information about mountain lions is available from Wild Aware Utah, wildawareutah.org. On Saturday, Oct. 5, at 6:23 p.m., a moose was reported on Twisted Branch Road. The animal was close to a bicycle. The person wanted an officer to respond to “scare it away so that he doesn’t get hurt,” according to police logs. On Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:26 a.m., an injured deer was reported in the area of Park Avenue and Snow Creek Drive. The police were told the animal’s injury was a result of a collision with a vehicle.
