PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A hack of the state's largest school district may have impacted 12,000 current and former employees. Providence Public Schools sent a letter to employees last Friday which said the network may have been accessed almost two weeks before the school’s IT staff detected what the district has been referring to as "irregular activity." The district previously shared that activity was detected on Sept. 11, but reported Friday that an investigation revealed information may have been accessed by an "unauthorized actor" between Aug. 30 and Sept. 11, and "that the information could include names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of employees." BACKGROUND: Providence schools without internet as they deal with ‘unprecedented’ network outage Superintendent Javier Montañez told Target 12 the district is still not referring to the situation as a "hack." "I'm not calling anything yet, because it's still an investigation," Montañez said. The district said Friday it was unable to determine "what files, if any, are in fact in the possession of this anonymous group," but that it was "operating as if tis group possesses that information." "We're giving information as we receive," Montañez added. "We're within our time period with 30 days to report anything we need to report.” In September, the district said both state and federal law enforcement began an investigation, which the district later shared was focusing on "an unverified, anonymous group" claiming to possess district files. In recent days, the district informed staff it would provide a free membership for five years of identity theft resolution services provided by IDIQs IdentityIQ service. The district said enrollment was not required, but encouraged. "We are also evaluating additional measures to further enhance our protocols for the protection of your personal information and accounts," the district wrote Friday. MORE: PPSD to provide staff with credit monitoring after network hack The district is opening a dedicated call center beginning Tuesday for anyone with questions about the incident.
