MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- If you were hoping to register to vote in Shelby County in the upcoming election, you missed the deadline. But for those who did make it, they'll join a record number of voters in the county. As the clock ticked down Monday to the deadline to register to vote in Shelby County, first-time voters such as 22-year-old college student Antonio Henderson were at the election commission making sure they would be able to cast their ballot. "You should vote because our ancestors worked really hard for us to vote," Henderson said. "They put in the work, the heart, the dedication and everything. I feel like it's very important to vote." Linda Phillips is the Shelby County Election Administrator. "We currently have 604,353 registered voters and that's as of October 1st," Phillips said. "I'm sure we've added another thousand, at least, in the last seven days." Agencies investigating 6 law enforcement-involved shootings in Mid-South A first for Phillips since she assumed her current position. "I don't recall having crossed the 600,000 line in any of the eight years that' I've been here," Phillips said. When it comes to age, roughly 70 percent of the new registrations are people under the age of 36. "Typically, voters in that age group don't vote as frequently as older voters," Phillips said. "Our largest block of voters who vote most consistently are those 55 and above. I hope they come out to vote." 57 percent of the county's voters are women. "That's 58 to 59 (percent) are women and the rest are men," Phillips said. "So, I haven't seen any real change in that." Gov. says Memphis ‘picking a fight with state’ over guns What will be driving many voters to the polls is the presidential general election. Locally, if you live in Memphis, you'll be voting on four different referendums. "The one that most people are interested in, of course, is the referendum about gun rights. It would require permits in the city," Phillips said. "It would ban the sale of assault rifles and it would establish red flag laws. But of course, none of that's permissible under state law. So,  who knows?" Early voting in Shelby County is between October 16 through October 31. Election day is November 5.
