NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A former central Indiana police officer is awaiting his federal prison sentencing after being found guilty of depriving suspects' rights and witness tampering in several excessive force cases involving weapons and violence. Aaron Strong, a former officer with the New Castle Police Department, was found guilty last Friday of three counts of deprivation of rights under color of law and one count of witness tampering. Sentencing information has not been released as of 2 p.m. Monday. The charges stem from three different excessive force incidents involving Strong. The officer reportedly injured three suspects during the incidents by using a collapsible baton and less-lethal bean bag rounds fired from a shotgun, violating their Constitutional Rights in the process. Baton attack and witness tampering One of the charges was related to an August 2019 incident in which Strong reportedly hit a man 20 times with a collapsible baton while he was handcuffed and lying on the ground. Court documents state the man suffered serious injuries to his head, jaw, arms and back. Aaron Strong (WXIN file photo) Strong and another officer had stopped the man in the early morning hours of Aug. 18, 2019, because he "looked suspicious." The man reportedly ran away after the officers confronted him, but they quickly caught up and he surrendered. Indiana State Police began investigating the incident after fellow officers reported that Strong had attacked the man while he was lying on the ground in handcuffs. The reporting officers told ISP that Strong had no reason to hit the man. Strong's witness tampering charge stems from the ensuing ISP investigation. The NCPD officer reportedly "knowingly made false statements to the officer" investigating the incident in an attempt to cover his tracks. Less lethal shotgun incident The other two deprivation of rights charges against Strong stem from a 2017 incident involving two pretrial detainees. Strong reportedly used excessive force against the two suspects on July 12, 2017, while acting as both an officer with the New Castle Police Department and commander of the Henry County SWAT team. The federal indictment filed against Strong claimed he kicked a detainee in the head “without legal justification," according to witnesses. Strong also reportedly shot a “bean bag shotgun round at close range without legal justification,” injuring a second detainee. The offense resulted in bodily injury and "involved the use of a dangerous weapon," the indictment said. Aftermath, charges and sentencing In the aftermath of the August 2019 incident, a special prosecutor filed a misdemeanor criminal recklessness charge against Strong. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 180 days. However, all 180 days of the sentence were suspended, resulting in Strong serving no jail time. Rather, the officer spent half a year on probation. Previous reporting shows Strong then resigned from the New Castle Police Department in December 2019. Then, in July 2022, a federal grand jury in Indianapolis returned an indictment charging Strong with three counts of deprivation under color of law and one count of witness tampering. He was then found guilty last Friday on all four counts. Strong is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday. As of 2 p.m. Monday, sentencing information has not been released to FOX59/CBS4. This story will be updated once the sentencing information is filed.
