WILLIAMSBURG, Ind. -- A 23-year-old Williamsburg man has been charged after he reportedly forced a foster relative to perform sexual acts, in some cases while he documented it on his phone. According to court documents, filed earlier this month in Randolph County, Matthew Baumgartner was charged with seven child molesting charges, four classified as a Level 1 felony and three classified as a Level 3 felony. In mid-September, detectives with the Randolph County Sheriff's Department were contacted by the Randolph County Department of Child Services of a reported sex crime that was brought to their attention by an 11-year-old. Indiana police officer found guilty in excessive force case involving attacks on detainees The documents said the 11-year-old was visiting a former foster family of hers, which included Baumgartner. During that visit, Baumgartner reportedly forced the child to perform sexual acts. The girl told law enforcement that this was not the first time that Baumgartner had forced her to perform sexual acts, stating that she "tried to report other instances of sexual abuse" and other members of the family had not believed her. "(The juvenile) stated that (Baumgartner) would often tell her that if she didn't do something, then something bad would happen," the documents said. "(The juvenile) also stated that (Baumgartner) told her that it was their secret and (she) couldn't tell anyone." When law enforcement officials spoke with Baumgartner, he initially denied that sexual contact occurred. Later in the interview, however, the documents state that Baumgartner admitted to having sexual contact with the juvenile on multiple times. 3 sentenced for 8 armed robberies at Indianapolis cell phone stores Baumgartner reportedly told police that the first instance occurred when the juvenile was 8 years old. Over the course of multiple years, there were more than 10 instances of sexual contact, some of which were reportedly documented by video or through photos. The documents said that Baumgartner was placed under arrest and Baumgartner's cell phones were seized by law enforcement. According to court documents, Baumgartner's pretrial conference is scheduled for Dec. 19 and his jury trial is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2025.
