FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A man accused of shooting his brother-in-law at a family cookout on Fort Wayne's north side this past August is now facing 3 to 16 years in prison. Anthony J. Kidd, 53, pleaded guilty in Allen Superior Court to a Level 3 felony count of aggravated battery Monday in connection to the shooting, which took place shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 3 at a home on Peartree Lane. Court docs: Man accused of shooting brother-in-law over argument at cookout Kidd's plea came as part of a plea agreement with Allen County prosecutors, who agreed to drop additional charges of criminal recklessness and felony use of a firearm they initially levied against him. The scene of an Aug. 3 shooting on Peartree Lane that left a man in life-threatening condition. The plea deal does not call for a fixed term of imprisonment, but Level 3 felonies carry sentences of 3 to 16 years in prison with an advisory sentence of 9 years, according to Indiana code. On the night of the shooting, medics took a man who had been shot at the home to a hospital in life-threatening condition with a laceration to his liver, according to Allen Superior Court documents. The man was able to tell police, however, that his brother-in-law, "Tony," was the one who shot him, according to court documents. Investigators identified "Tony" as Kidd. The man further told police there had been a cookout at the home celebrating a family member's career in the military and most of the people there had been drinking. Kidd is accused of insulting a family member, sparking an argument between him and the man who ended up shot, court documents said. At some point, Kidd confronted the man while holding something behind his back. A screen door separated the two during this confrontation, with the man standing inside the home while Kidd stood outside, court documents said. Kidd is accused of at first threatening to shoot the man, and then accused of bringing a gun from behind his back and pulling the trigger. He's then accused of firing another shot that struck the man as he tried to close the front door of the home, court documents said. A nearby home had security footage that allegedly showed Kidd standing outside, and the victim shutting the front door just as a flash went off. Kidd could then be seen driving off in a pickup truck, according to court documents. Police used the footage to identify the truck, and Kidd was found later that night during a traffic stop. According to court documents, police also found two guns in his passenger seat, one of which had a spent round in the cylinder. According to court documents, when police asked Kidd if he wanted to speak with a detective, Kidd said, “For what? Dude threatened me and I did what I did.” “I can’t believe he shot me,” the man Kidd is accused of shooting said in court documents. “I’ve known this man my entire life.” Kidd is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 15.
