FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- A Christian media organization in Fort Wayne will be offering people the chance to create simple wills and other estate planning documents for free. Worship Anew, which has been headquartered in Fort Wayne since 1980 and broadcasts weekly worship services, is offering the program in order to equip senior adults -- the demographic Worship Anew mainly caters to -- with valuable resources. "Three of those very important things that if you wait until you need them it's too late are a will, a Power of Attorney and an advanced healthcare directive," said Jon Dize, director of operations and legacy giving for Worship Anew. The only requirement in order to receive the free services is to include a gift to any charity in the will. According to a 2024 survey from Caring.com -- an organization that provides people "information and support as they care for aging parents, spouses and other loved ones" -- only 32% of Americans have a will. Dize said some of the reasons people neglect creating a will include worrying about the costs -- which can exceed $1,000 depending on various factors -- not knowing who to trust or thinking they do not have assets worthy of a will. "Everybody has an estate. Everybody has things that mean something to them, whether it's grandma's china, whether it's a home ... if you don't choose how those assets are taken care of, the State of Indiana will [and] the federal government will, and most people would rather choose themselves rather than have the state do it for them," Dize said. Dize also said some people either do not think it is important or refuse to discuss end-of-life issues. With the cost concerns being out of the picture, Dize hopes taking away some of the barriers will convince people to take advantage of the program and create a will. "I think many of us can think of people who did not have that done and the trouble and the things their thriving family went through, and so this is just something we want to provide our friends, our readers [and] our viewers to make sure that they have the resources they need to make sure their wishes are taken care of," Dize said. Worship Anew Discusses Barriers to People Making a Will Worship Anew will host two sessions this month at its headquarters where people can meet with Rob Myers, an estate planning attorney with Myers Law Office, and go through the planning process: Tuesday, Oct. 22 - Noon to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 - 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. According to Worship Anew, some situations may require more than a simple will. In those cases, the attorney will advise people of any potential costs involved at a discounted fee. However, Dize said a simple will should suffice in most situations. Those interested in attending one of the sessions should contact Worship Anew at 888-286-8002 or [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
