by Kelsey Penrose Carson City voters have received their official mail-in ballots, with what some are calling a major problem. In the race for U.S. Congress, currently held by incumbent Mark Amodei, an Independent American Party (IAP) candidate, Lynn Chapman, has been incorrectly categorized as a Democrat. Carson Now has repeatedly attempted to contact Carson City Clerk Recorder Scott Hoen, both in person and by phone. During a trip to his office, this reporter was informed Hoen had barred his staff from speaking with Carson Now in any capacity. At the time of publication, Hoen has not responded to a request for comment. According to one Carson Now reader, attempts to call Hoen directly result in a hang-up with no voicemail option available. Other typos were found on the enclosed "secrecy wrap," a piece of paper included by the Carson City Clerk's office to "wrap" around their ballot. First, the first line states: Please insert your voted ballot inside the secrecy sleeve. Written in red, it asks "What if I want to vote in person?" which answers: Please call our office or refer to you sample ballot for In Person Voting, despite no sample ballot being provided. A number of sections on the "secrecy sleeve" ask voters to refer to the sample ballot. There is still no word on why sample ballots have not been sent out to voters in Carson City. This is important because sample ballots have long been the source explaining the ballot questions in their entirety. There are currently seven statewide questions on the ballot, along with two Carson City specific ballot questions. The sample ballot is available online however, which includes the ballot question explanations. They can be viewed here. On hand-deliver, it states: You may bring your voted ballot to the Clerk's office in the Courthouse during normal business hours." At the bottom, it states: For an "I voter Sticker" please call or come to our office. It also lists several ballot drop locations, but does not include their addresses. The Democratic party did not run a candidate this year, with non partisan candidate Greg Kidd expected to pull from progressive voters as well as non partisan voters. Carson Now has reached out to the campaigns of Kidd and Chapman, as well as the state Democratic party, and will update with their responses when they are available. This could be an issue for all parties involved, but especially Kidd, as potential left-leaning voters who may have thrown their votes behind a non-partisan candidate could swap for the individual they believe to be a Democrat. Chapman has virtually no presence online, and it is unknown where she stands on any political issues. However, the IAP is described as a Christian nationalist far-right political party. We will update with new information as it becomes available. It is believed a corrected ballot will be coming to voters via mail; however, a number of voters have already dropped off their mail-in ballots as of Monday, and it is not known how this issue will effect those voters.
