AUSTIN (KXAN) — A witness told police a shooting in northwest Austin last week interrupted a fight about paying for damages after a parking lot fender bender. A 17-year-old died and two others were hurt in the shooting in a parking lot in the 12000 block of Research Boulevard on Oct. 1, police shared at the time. They first got a call about a shooting at 2:44 a.m. and found Nathan Ockleberry in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene less than 20 minutes later. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: One dead, two hurt in northwest Austin homicide A white Chevrolet pickup truck backed into a Nissan Altima as it was parking, according to one of the people inside the Nissan. That person told police her friends asked the truck driver for money because of the damages, and a fight broke out when he didn't want to pay. The truck driver told police he saw people outside the Nissan as he turned into the parking lot, then saw the car follow him. They collided when he tried to back into a parking spot. He told police when they approached, he "said he didn't have money but would use insurance," and added one of the people in the Nissan came up to him and "said things like 'I'll run your pockets' 'Give me your money,'" according to the affidavit. The truck driver appeared to have been armed, according to surveillance video, but he wasn't the one who started shooting. According to the affidavit, police believe the truck driver may have been meeting another group of people in the parking lot, and one of those people fired at the group after a fistfight broke out. Surveillance video shows the truck driver pulling a gun out of his waistband after being shot, according to the affidavit. MAP: Where have Austin’s homicides occurred in 2024? The truck driver was shot in the elbow and drove himself to the hospital, police said. So far KXAN has found an affidavit for one person who was arrested Oct. 2 and released Oct. 4 in connection with the case. Adrianna Lynn Gutierrez, 21, was inside the Nissan and faces tampering with or fabricating physical evidence charges after police say she parked the car after officers were on scene. "We look forward to our day in court. When all is said and done, I am confident my client will be found innocent of these charges. We are eager for the truth to come out," Gutierrez' attorney Zachary Bidner told KXAN, adding he and his client would not discuss the facts of the case with the media.
